The Edge Between Flexibility and Self-Neglect

Okanagan summers are legendary.

Lake days, house guests, camping trips. Kids at home all day, long evenings on the patio, after-dinner ice cream outings. A calendar that somehow fills itself.

For all its breezy afternoons and spectacular sunsets, summer asks a lot of us. As our schedules somehow slow down and speed up at the same time, many of the things that support our well-being quietly slide down the priority list. Not because we don't care. Not because we lack discipline. Simply because it's summer in the Okanagan.

I'm not talking about missing a workout here and there, or treating ourselves to an extra drink. I'm talking about the small ways we stop showing up for ourselves. Skipping that phone call to a friend. The bodywork or counselling appointment we've been meaning to book. A few quiet minutes before responding to everyone else's needs. We tell ourselves we'll get back to "real life" after the guests leave, after the holidays, after the smoke clears.

Maintenance isn't just about keeping up with reps and steps, or the inches down. Maintenance includes spending time with people who understand our goals and support the changes we're making. The communities we choose are part of how we care for ourselves.

At what point does relaxing into the Okanagan summer vibe edge towards self-neglect? When does giving ourselves a break become abandoning the very practices that help us stay well?

As part of DEEM Health + Fitness's Maintain, Don't Gain summer workshop series, I'll be offering Taking Care of Your Heart—Beyond Cardio. We will explore how a body-based approach strengthens mindset, emotion, and habit—the foundation for positive change that lasts.

Together, we'll explore the subtle line between flexibility and self-neglect. I'll share body-based tools to help you recognize the difference, so that you can continue caring for yourself in ways that support your goals while still enjoying everything an Okanagan summer has to offer.
