What Somatic Counselling Really Looks Like

Somatic Counselling in Vernon, British Columbia | Okanagan Valley

Somatic counselling seems to be everywhere on social media these days. It’s trending—but many people still don’t actually know what it is or what happens in a session.

I’ve been immersed in somatic practices for over 25 years—learning, practicing, and teaching. And especially when working with chronic pain or illness, I don’t experience the body as something to fix or overcome. Whatever our health, identity, or life situation, I believe the body is a powerful resource—a gateway to curiosity, aliveness, and possibility.

In my practice based in Vernon, BC, I support people from across the Okanagan Valley and beyond who are seeking a more compassionate, embodied way of relating to themselves.

Somatic counselling is about coming back into relationship with your whole self—mind, emotion, and body.

“Somatic” means of the body

And your body holds more than posture or pain. It carries your story. It holds your protections, your patterns, and your possibilities. It also holds wisdom you may not have had permission to access—until now.

In session, we don’t just talk about what’s happening—we turn toward your actual experience. When you slow down and shift your attention inward, what sensations do you notice? How does that information inform your thoughts, your feelings, your choices?

As you re-member this inner knowing, you may notice your behaviours shift—not through pressure, but through increased awareness and choice.

This work is subtle, body-based, and creative. It’s about learning to be with yourself differently. Curiosity is the gateway to compassion.
